You can run Freenet from the command line:
rm freenet.conf
chmod a+x *.sh
./start-freenet.sh

This will start freenet's configuration system up. Answer the questions.

./start-freenet.sh

This will start freenet up. You can then access fproxy etc via links or
lynx on http://localhost:8888/

You can also do command line inserts and fetches using
java -cp freenet.jar:freenet-ext.jar freenet.client.cli.Main

Run it to get help; basically:
get CHK at blahblah...
put CHK@ filename.txt
