Hello.

I am a security researcher and privacy advocate and I am currently
running 25 servers in diverse locations that are mainly being used to
run Tor relays and exits. At the moment, 6 of them are also running
Hyphanet nodes with unmetered connections and between 10 and 500 GiB
of storage for the datastore. Most of them are VPSes.

I plan to add more nodes to the network, and I would like to ask a few
questions about optimizing them in order to maximize their contribution
to the project. I don't use them to browse freesites, so there is no
need for them to try to protect my own anonymity. If you don't mind:

 - Should I connect each of my nodes together as darknet peers, since
they are all equally trusted? I do not want any of them to attempt
to make suboptimal routing decisions by prioritizing darknet peers
when there are better routes available.

 - Should I openly advertise my node's darknet ports and noderef on
platforms that I am active on so that people who trust me (but who I
do not know) can add my nodes as "trusted" entrypoints?

 - Are there any settings I should adjust that will improve my node's
contribution to the network? I am happy to turn off any security or
anonymity settings if it improves network performance without also
decreasing the security of other users on the network. For example,
would setting 'node.writeLocalToDatastore' have any downsides if I
am not worried about my own personal privacy or anonymity?

 - My servers are primarily CPU and memory constrained. Are there any
configuration tweaks I can make which would lighten the load on the
processor to improve its overall performance? For example, adjusting
the compression ratio and compression percentage? I am getting about
2.5 Mbps (in+out) at 70% CPU usage, but the port is always capable
of 100 Mbps minimum. Disk I/O is never a bottleneck.

 - Should I run a seednode? If so, is there anything I have to do other
than toggle the setting, or would it be necessary for the project to
manually add my node to the list of seednodes?

I plan to add a number of new servers soon, and I will put Hyphanet on
many of them. They will all be running alongside Tor relays, resources
permitting.

Regards,
forest
