JFile (in combination with FMSYNC: http://www.fmsync.com/fmc/index.html)
does allow a couple of things which are *necessary* if you intend to create
records on the Pilot:

1. serial # generation
2. run a script after synch

so you can have the Pilot auto-enter, say "1000001" for a Record Number, and
then run the Create Related Records script after synch.

Mobile, so far as I could tell, would neither generate a unique ID nor force
Filemaker to perform auto-enter on synch. So you end up with a new record
with no value in the Record Number field.

A comparison between JFile/FMsynch and Mobile here:
http://www.fmsync.com/fmc/fmm.html

JFile also allows field formatting - drop downs, checkboxes, etc. Mobile
does not.

JFile allows a user to open a database as read only.

JFile *does* allow placement of related fields in the Palm Pilot database,
and values entered in those related fields will populate correctly in
desktop eBase on synchronization. But it's weird. It's not a live link,
the related data is copied into the Palm Pilot flat file; if you change it
it only updates the related file on synchronization. Think "related field",
not "related portal", and what you can't do in the first that you can do in
the second. You only get to see the first related record based on the
relationship sort method, and if there's already a related value you don't
get to create a new related record, only edit the existing one. I'm sure
there are other tricky problems with it, but Mobile doesn't offer this at
all.

I found JFile a little trickier to set up than Mobile (which is very easy),
even with the FMSynch wizards. But it's worth it.
