I just tried both sorts and it works. One is a sorted value list by source code the other is a sorted value list by description. I am on Windows 98, ebase v.102, FM Pro 5.
Ex.
In payments entry, I opened Define Value Lists; choose "Source Code
List"; Clicked on Specify; choose sort by first field radio button; and
it works just like I want with the source CODE listed numerically first
(1-9) and then alphabetically.
Am I missing something here? It should work... but you do need to do
that for every file that has a source code list.

corresponding Specify button and then decided how you want the list sorted by choosing either radio button on the bottom of the dialog box.Sorting by the first field results in an alphabetical (numerals first) list of your source codes with their descriptions.
Sorting by the second field results in a list that is sorted by your descriptions of your source codes alphabetical list (numerals first).
