>>Q. I downloaded, and it asks me for a password when I try to open with
FMPro 5. If I offer "master" as the password, it starts to open, but
then closes itself without displaying any info. How do I open this file?

A. The ZIP_. file is designed to be part of the ebase system. It's got
fields, scripts, passwords, and relations already built in to work with all
the other ebase files. When you open ebase, the ZIP_ should get opened,
too. Once ebase is open, you can poke around the ZIP_ file by clicking on
WINDOW (in the top filemaker menu line) then click on ZIP_ in the file list.
To go back to ebase, click on WINDOW, then click on NAMES_

>> Q. I can't figure out how to do the replace Command. Also, when I try to
work
with the zip_ file I downloaded, it won't let me open it because it was
created in FM 5.5 and I have version 4.1.

A. The file you downloaded does work only with Filemaker 5. I'll post a
Filemaker 4 version in the next day of so.

To do the replace, do the following steps (these instructions work with
Filemaker 5 and Ebase 1.03, but it should be pretty similar for Filemaker 4
and Ebase 1.02):

- Backup first. You will be doing a mass overwrite of data, and you could
screw up and overwrite the wrong field.

- You need to be on a layout that has the COUNTY field. I don't see it in
any of the regular ebase layouts, so you'll have to modify a layout. For
example, you could modify the CUSTOM SCREEN 1. Click on the CUSTOM tab, then
click on VIEW (in the Filemaker menu line), then click on LAYOUT MODE.

- You can add a field here. Click and hold on the FIELD button (in the gray
left -hand column) and drag it over to the middle of the white layout area.
Let go of the button. This should pop up a SPECIFY FIELD box. Scroll down
and field the COUNTY field. It may not be in alphabetical order, so you
might have to hunt a bit. Double-click on the county field. It should show
up on the layout. You might want to make the field bigger to show long
county names.

- Click on VIEW, and click on BROWSE to get back to data entry mode.

- Click on FIND ALL if you want all records updated. You could find a small
subset of records first it you want to test it.

- Click on the COUNTY field so the cursor stays in the box.

- For Filemaker 5, click on RECORDS, then click on REPLACE. A REPLACE
dialog box should pop up. Click on REPLACE WITH CALCULATED RESULT. A
SPECIFY CALCULATION box will pop up. Click on the down-arrow next to
"Current File("names_") in the upper left corner. Scroll down and select
LOOKUP FROM ZIP TABLE. The list of available fields below it should change.
Double-click on COUNTY. The text:

     LOOKUP FROM ZIP TABLE:COUNTY

should get filled in the white box in the middle. Click OK, then click
REPLACE.

The REPLACE command is slow, so it may take a while if you have many
thousands of records. If a matching zip code is found, the COUNTY field
will get filled with data. You might want to scroll through some records to
make sure the county values look right.

For Filemaker 4, the REPLACE command is found by clicking on MODE in the
Filemaker menu line.

Let me know how it works.
