Looking over your recent postings, It seems that you are importing data from
outside ebase and want to add extra information at the same time. Assuming
you are using the ebase import routines. 'ADMIN > SCREEN 2 > Import a File
into ebase' then choosing "Import a File into Names" you are presented once
you press the "Other" button with a number of potentially appropriate fields
including a group of ten User defined fields. These fields are all
available to use in sorts but you will have to have a full copy of FileMaker
to place the User Defined fields on a layout where you can use them in a
Find. The FileMaker Manual covers the basics of modifying layouts if you
have FileMaker and need to do that.
For a short term identifier, The "Memo" field is readily available on the
HOME layout after an import and is a good choice. You can then use the
identifier you place in Memo at import to identify and sort or as a
reference point to add a source code etc later.
