The only "work-around" (to getting into layout mode and actually messing 
with the layout) that comes to mind is to export the data using the 
Output->File Export->For Letter Merges function and create your letter in 
your favorite word processor.  It's really an easy way to do it.

And yes, the field HAS TO HAS TO HAS TO be calculated to pull off what it does.
