Just an update (or upgrade :-) on the status - opkg update gives lots of errors, but never says explicitly that none of them are fatal.
opkg upgrade was failing....and the network connection was being dropped. Or likely, BECAUSE the network connection was being dropped. And why was that? because the screen timed out....suspended. Is there a bug in that regard? Changing Settings/Suspend to off helped.
