While I haven't used the Dell's in question, I have used Supermicro and ASUS-based hosts with onboard SATA.

On the Supermicro, you must choose between multiple modes for SATA, basically "Enhanced Mode" or "Compatible Mode" or "Legacy Mode". Each vendor has a slightly different combination, especially if the motherboard supports ATA and SATA on the same chipset.

When reporting issues, it might help to let us know what mode the SATA is set up in, assuming the Dell has multiple modes.

I bet that if one person is having problems and another, with the same model, is not, that this "mode" is the cause.
