I couldn't install from the livecd to the hard drive- it wasn't being detected.  I moved to a different machine and had no problems there.  The 3Com nic in question was replaced with another 3Com 3c905C-TX which works fine.  On the machine that's working, I was able to install to the hard drive when I booted with acpi disabled.

Run from a shell:

echo "hint.acpi.0.disabled=1" >> /boot/loader.conf && shutdown -r now
