unless the system in question is an Itanium, the 64-bitness of the normal intel systems (Pentium + EM64T, or amd64) are 32-bit back compatible and will boot and run a 32-bit OS just fine.
Chances are there is some issue with the controller chips, and that has not much to do with 64-bit capability of said system.
