even if we just dump the xml feed onto pfsense box first
not thinking clearly w/ 1 hour power nap

You've still got the direction wrong - your firewall should never be
querying internal sources for foo, processing foo, and making rule
decisions based on foo`. This is the classic question of push v.
pull, and you should be wanting something internal pushing to your
firewall, not the other way around.
