We're using Squid.
I'll see how it looks over the next few days. Nobody was calling me in
a panic yesterday so that's a good sign.

Unlikely that's related I suspect, or possibly just something
appearing for the same reason that didn't previously by chance. Are
you using Squid or another proxy on the system?
Is there a smart way to figure out the optimum MTU or is it just
trial and
error.
Trial and error, though if you get down to 1350 and things still don't
work it's probably not MTU related.
