If you check the box to redirect the gateway, then OpenVPN should push a new default gateway to the client. Can you show the routing table from the client side so we can better see what the problem is? (On BSD and such it's usually "netstat -rn", on windows it's "route print") Also, if the client is on Windows Vista or 7, make sure you are running the client as Administrator or it can't alter the routes.
