OK, I need help here. I am not a pidgin developer; I don't know my way around. Can someone tell me what file to extract from what zip, so that the search function works?

There is a file you can replace in the GTK lib to fix this issue. The way to disable sounds is with the "Mute Sounds" checkbox in Tools->Preferences->Sounds.
