I believe some Pidgin developers do use OpenFire, but we really don't recommend it. It has some serious bugs (failure to validate XML properly, various crashes), including some which have been a problem for Pidgin in the past. XMPP is indeed a good choice for an internal messaging server, however, that much of this recommendation is good. (I'm not going to say we actively *discommend* OpenFire, either, but I do want to clarify that this OpenFire recommendation is _not_ a recommendation of the Pidgin team.)
