Is this on WIndows or some other operating system? If Windows, press Control-Alt-Delete, then click on the Processes tab, then click the heading Image Name, and make sure there's no Pidgin.exe listed as a running process.

I am trying to upgrade to the latest version of Pidgin, but keep
getting the error message: "An instance of Pidgin is currently
running. Please exit and try again." When trying to upgrade, I have
actually got Pidgin closed. Do I have to de-install and start again?
    Please advise.
    Many thanks
    Nicky
