Evan, only happens when I reboot, not when I merely exit Pidgin and re-open Protocol is XMPP and version is 2.6.5

Based on your question, you're removing a buddy, reboot, and the buddy then re-appears, and moving a buddy from say group "Friends" to group "Coworkers", reboot and they're back in Friends? Does this happen if you merely exit Pidgin then reopen it (no reboot)? What protocol, and what version of Pidgin?
