Issue with Key Bindings

Dear Support,

I just switched from ICQ to pidgin.
Now I'm using Pidgin instead of ICQ.
As default Pidgin sends messages by hitting "Return".
So i read the FAQ to figure out how to change this. I found an entry with the following topic:"

How do I make Enter make a newline and Ctrl+Enter send?"

So I edited my gtkrc-file and it worked.
But i would like to have messages sent by hittind "ALT + S".
I tried to put that combination in the gtkrc-file and replaced

bind "<ctrl>Return" { "message_send" () }

with

bind "<alt>S" { "message_send" () }

Unfortanely it didn't work. By hitting ALT + S pidgin opens the smiley-surface.
Can you help to to figure out how to send messages by hitting ALT+S?
