Sorry for the multiple responses I thought this was from my work admin dlist as I sent out a note to everyone asking if they have experienced the same problem.
I have both the message rec'd and message rec'd to begin conversation and both do not work consistently. What the message rec'd to begin conv. Does is it plays the sound for the first ping, then goes silent with the rest even though I have the "message rec'd" checked too. I have tried one or the other too and nothing. It sounds like the reason you're not getting a sound when a message begins a conversation is simply that you don't have the "Message received begins conversation" sound event checked. To ensure that the sounds are played in all possible situations, you will also want to do the following: * check the "Sounds when conversation has focus" checkbox * set "Enable sounds" to "Always" (I mention the above, because it sounds like you've been randomly changing stuff without understanding what you're changing.)
