It's intended to provide a uniform user interface to multiple instant
messaging accounts, and one which presents them all in one place.
However, it cannot force different services to talk to each other, even
though one or two do do so.
The other thing it does is provide access to popular services from open
source and, maybe in some cases, any non-Windows platform.

RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
