I just found out about Pidgin and installed the client. I like it very much

I would guess that one of your plugins is doing it, presumably the
"FullScreen Busy" plugin.

Thank you for your assistance. I did a complete reinstall and removed
all plugins and now it's stable again. I'll have to be more careful in
the future I guess. I was hoping anyone knew of any particularily
menacing plugins.
