He replied off list. The message he was getting was this one:
"Unable to add the buddy %s because the username is invalid. Usernames
must be valid email addresses."
The address, in the error message, is a pure ASCII hotmail one, with an
8 byte user field, all lower case.

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.
