The certificate looks legit

The screenshot appears to be pidgin 2.12.0 using NSS, which is okay.

What most likely happened is that google sent a partial chain after the
first successful connection. Normally that's not a problem because the good
certificate from that successful connection is saved in the list shown in
buddy list -> tools menu -> certificates. So maybe something is stopping
that from being saved.
