Generally yes, you will need to know the exact username to add someone.
Depending on what protocol you're using, it might have a built-in option to
search for a buddy. Eg for Skype you can use the Accounts->{Your Skype
account}->Search for friends... option, such as
[image: Inline images 1]
in order to search for friends
