Asean Group Urges Help For Rohingyas
The Jakarta Globe, Saturday, February 7, 2009

The Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus is extremely concerned with the
decision by the government of Thailand to deport groups of Rohingya boat people
to an unknown location.
Similarly, the AIPMC is also concerned with the decision by the Indonesian
government to deport some of the Rohingya boat people stranded in Aceh Province
to Myanmar despite migrants’ claims of assured persecution and possibly even
death.

The AIPMC strongly urges the governments of Thailand and Indonesia to treat the
Rohingya boat people humanely and accord them protection. The two Asean member
states are also urged to cooperate with UN human rights and refugee agencies in
seeking a more understanding solution to the matter.

Thailand, as Asean chair and a border country with Myanmar, has an opportunity
to lead Asean in a new direction to correct the long-standing regional problems
created by the Myanmar military regime’s lack of governance and economic
mismanagement of the country.

Asean must put right its role in relation to this human security crisis, caused
in part by Asean’s decade-long tolerance of the Myanmar military regime’s
economic crimes, war against civilian communities and systematic persecution of
religious, ethnic and political groups.

AIPMC strongly recommends that Asean use its regional summit, to be held later
this month, to better address the issue of international migrants fleeing the
repressive Myanmar regime. Asean has an opportunity to show new leadership by
taking this opportunity to strengthen its Asean Charter and proposed Asean
Human Rights Body.

AIPMC is an organization comprising legislators from various Asean
member-states.
