Singapore Police Respond to Article On Widjaja Death
The Jakarta Globe, Monday, April 13, 2009

I refer to your article, “Student’s Family Denies Suicide Claim” published in
the Jakarta Globe on April 2. Below are comments made by the Singapore Police
spokesman in reply to media queries on this case:

An autopsy on David Widjaja was conducted by the Health Sciences Authorities on
March 3, 2009, as required by Singapore law.

The HSA is responsible for all forensic postmortem examinations in Singapore
and is an independent authority from the Singapore Police.

We understand that the parents of David Widjaja had authorized Nanyang
Technological University to collect the autopsy report on their behalf. When
NTU was informed that the autopsy report was ready on April 2 in the afternoon,
an officer from NTU collected the autopsy report the same afternoon and sent it
to the parents in the morning, or April 3.

In the Jakarta Globe report, the newspaper reported that the “family had also
been informed by a Singaporean police officer, Soh Chee Ing, who had the
opportunity to see David’s body, that there were no cuts on his wrists, which
was contradictory to NTU’s version.”

This is incorrect. Our officer, Soh Chee Eng, did not make any comments on the
deceased’s injuries to his next-of-kin as erroneously reported by the Jakarta
Globe.

It is unhelpful for uninvolved parties, including the media, to speculate on
the circumstances or cause of death or comments on how the case is being
handled.

Police investigations are continuing and the police will be thorough in its
investigations to establish what actually happened.

A coroner’s inquiry will be held.

Singapore law requires that in all unnatural deaths, the state coroner has the
power to hold an inquiry into the death unless it is later found to be due to
natural causes.

The coroner’s inquiry is held in open court where the coroner would inquire on
the full circumstances of the death, including whether any person is criminally
involved in the cause of the death. Police investigations are presented fully
to the coroner for the purpose.

While the date of the coroner’s inquiry has not been fixed, the case has been
fixed for further court mention on April 17. The intention is to ascertain the
progress of investigations as of the date of the mention. The family of David
Widjaja will be kept informed of further developments on the case.
