When I first met Neville Thiele, well over 10 years ago now, he told me that
one of the things he wanted to do more research in was how to reproduce LF
properly in rooms so that it had the directionally we normally hear.

So it would seem that at least he never believed that mono was enough below
80Hz, and anecdotally, I've never thought that bass was omnidirectional.
Pressure loading a room at LF is another matter, as Eric points out. Richard
Lee has often written about his trousers flapping with LF, and again in my
experience having bass (even merely in 1st order) decoded properly can
certainly give the impression of bass coming from different directions. Indeed,
the wave-front approximation of a large thump from the rear or side of the
listening position is very impressive and it seems the LF gives a greater
impression of the (large) space being reproduced.
