This role is part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFTV) and a major Formula 1 Grand Prix racing team. This KTP is part funded by the Technology Strategy Board in conjunction with the industry partner. This is a new position, which has been developed to improve the understanding of sound transmission in Formula 1 cars. The KTP Associate will work with the Formula 1 team to learn and assess the company’s specific needs then transfer the relevant knowledge from the University about sound recording and analysis of the extreme high sound pressure levels found in Formula 1 race cars. The successful candidate will gain a detailed understanding of all facets of the operation of one of the most successful Grand Prix racing teams in the world and will also have the opportunity to make strong industry contacts in the UK and internationally. The Associate will report jointly to Dr. Gavin Kearney in TFTV and the Project Director of the Formula 1 team. This role will suit a recent graduate with a Masters degree in sound engineering, or a related area, who has a solid understanding of commercial sound recording practice as well as good digital signal processing and programming skills. It is desirable that the candidate has good knowledge of formal research methods, excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to describe technical concepts to non-technical users, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Salary will be £24,766 a year. There is also an additional support for travel costs throughout the project. The post is full-time and is available for a period of 51 weeks.
