yes, yes, no, but designed a playback system for it and got the t-shirt.
my gripe: technically it is just as boring as 5.1, repeating every
single mistake.
what i like: it's immensely practical as an upgrade path from 5.1, they
do great marketing, they created very interesting codecs for it, they
bring height into the discussion (although the system is not too good at
height localisation), and the system sounds a lot better than 5.1 if
implemented well (more robust, larger listening area).
plus they are a contender to dolby, which can't be bad for the market.
it also gives irrefutable proof that classic stereophonic (i.e.
pair-wise) miking techniques have been scaled up as far as they will go,
and now we have to come up with new tricks.
the system is just as under-spec'ed in terms of signal relationships as
any stereo technique before it, it's again just a bunch of loudspeaker
positions. some people use supercardioid arrays, others put omnis
everywhere, or any combination in between, some use shotgun interference
tubes to get some channel separation.
we did a comparison recording 2 years ago for ICSA with 150+ tracks
featuring several different auro-3d miking approaches and including two
eigenmikes, but there have been no funds so far to review and open up
the data, i'm afraid. i've been meaning to address this, but it's a lot
of grunt work...
