Martin Leese:

>Erato "gravure universelle"

"Gravure universelle" was used during part of the 60´s
to describe a Stereo LP disk as being compatible
with playback using a mono cartridge.

This used the elliptical filter in the Neumann cutter
set to 300 Hz.

Then all Stereo information below 300 Hz was mono.

Thus there were no 45/45° or vertical cutter movement
for out of polarity information below 300 Hz.

And it was claimed that this type of cut was playable
using a mono cartridge.

It came into use for a couple of years after the record
companies stopped supplying mono and stereo LP
versions of their records.

My own thoughts is that this type of record had some part
of the grooves mangled by the mono cartridges being totallly
rigid in the 45/45° and vertical direction but played with lots
more distortion than necessary.

But that is history now.
