Hi Sursounders, I wonder if you might be able to help - I have a core sound Tetramic that needs repair and I'm looking for someone in the UK that is qualified to do so. I have owned the mic since 2015 and it has already been back to the US for a repair in spring 2018. It now appears to have developed another fault, similar to the first but on another capsule (see later), but the cost of sending to the US, wrangling with customs to get it back (£85 shipping and I got stung £138 to get it back into the UK last time) and the thought of a long period of downtime rather puts me off and I would like to explore UK based options first.
From correspondence with Len Moskowitz, I understand the previous fault was hard to diagnose - output one was suffering from a intermittent crackle followed by a very loud pop, but when at Coresound for repair it failed to exhibit this. Not wishing to have the mic returned and find it still not working, the FET ring in capsule one was replaced and, after recalibration, the mic was returned. Sure enough, the problem was gone, but I now have another issue with sudden pops on output three - very frustrating! An A format recording of the fault can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1bcvyCN1hBgP_aBZ_UIrKZLS6j82Ejowa?usp=sharing My studio is my business and I can't afford this kind of regular repair cost and downtime, so a UK based repair option would be most welcome. Any suggestions? As an addition to this, has anyone else had this kind of problem? I work in the Scottish West Highland, just north of Oban. It is more humid here than much of the UK and I have experimented with warming the mic near the stove which can sometimes alleviate the issue for a short time. The mic housing is brass and I wonder if condensation might be a factor? Having said that, I have a wide selection of mics here from 50's ribbons to modern capacitors and have never experienced this issue with any other mic. Also, when the Tetramic was new (and also following repair) it worked perfectly at all times of year, so I'm not sure that theory might be a red herring! I would like to add that this is not a rant or a jibe at Len or coresound. In fact, it is so frustrating because I hugely value the Tetramic - it is in use on every session and I can't imagine making recording without it now, but the lack of reliability is sadly forcing me to look at other options.
