So I wondered; is there a method to "convert" binaural to
horizontal-only FOA?

Jumping in, after the fact.

*If you know the transfer function which led to the binaural rendition, especially in movement, you essentially have in your hands an "infinite order" system of equations, to be solved. Theoretically, you can solve the sparse system represented in time for pretty much any and all ambisonic systems. As long as it moves; if it doesn't, it'll yield just two degrees of freedom, and those will be well mixed against even the first order WXYZ-degrees.
