Yolanda UIN 4898262: I suggest you join a couple of the mailing lists for Linux or FreeBSD. They will start to bring you up to speed. For most people the cost is not the major issue. Rather it is the time it takes learning new syntax AFTER getting either of the OS's installed properly. IF you have an off-the-shelf system from a "name" brand, you can probably find someone who is running Linux or FreeBSD and get them to coach you through the steps. IF you are running some form of screen reader [A.K.A. I have not heard of either OS being able to do that, yet?] IF you still have a '386 with 8 MB of RAM laying about you can make it work well with Linux or FreeBSD. They scream in comparision to say, DOS 5 and Windows 3.1. I recommend being curious and you will be surprised on what you do find.
