I'm pretty sure that the hardware checks have already been done at this
point, although some of the modules may be doing checks later, when they're
loaded.
I deleted a lot of the modules found under /lib/modules last night (after
making a backup copy of the directory), and got the dependency step to run
quite a bit faster.
