The "modem-slot" you reported on is probably a PCMCIA slot (type I, II or
III) They are nowdays refered to as PC-Cards (stupid name INMO since all
cards for a PC fit in the name). Anway, there's a standard (although I
don't know which one in this case) and I would guess on PCMCIA type (or is
it class?) I. You can try and find a modem for this, but I must warn you
that thay're really expensive like all PCMCIA equipment.
A normal network card costed 400-500$ to my dads machine not so long ago,
unfortunately his job took it back before I had time to try it in the
network. Now the stupid batteries have gone dead and it's just a slow 386
(It was a 486DX4-75 but it has W95 and DriveSpace installed and it feels
slower than most 386 computers) :(

If the harddrive is damaged you may have problem finding a new one that
fits. You'll probably need to find a 2.5" drive - and that's rare these
days. I've never actually figured out why I bought a 2.5" HD for my
486DX2-80 but it's small and nice. (It looks better than other HDs I've
seen.) Anyway, you can just try and reformat it and see what happends after
that.
