I just managed to get a 40X CDROM to work in my Compaq Deskpro 66M.
I was about to give up, after trying two different CDROM drives etc.
For some reason the Lite-On 40X in the Digital Research Technology
package would not work. I tried two of them. Finally I got a NewCom
40X (actually a NEC CDR-3000A) and it works! Also required was a
DTC 2183E ISA to IDE adapter ($11 from CDW). I wanted to get a sound
card with an IDE interface, but they seem to be unavailable now. Two
low cost sound cards I looked at used to have the interface, but
current production leaves the parts off the board. So a Compaq 486
can have an IDE CDROM. Some models may be able to accommodate a CDROM
as a slave on the primary IDE controller with an updated configuration
utility (SP3737.exe or later) from the Compaq website.
