first, i'd like to thank all of you for your kind
help with this frustrating & vexing puzzle.
to address the excellent points you've raised:
1. i have 3 different 'puters, with 3 other monitors.
2. they, of course, all use dos ;-)
3. all of the monitor / machine / cable / video-card /
system-configurations work, inter-change-ably.
4. the nec didn't work on <any> of them properly.
5. i've tested-it using every possible monitor / graphics
display software; including the waite groups' "fractint",
(a wonderful fractal-image generator); which lets me
chose <any> video-display-mode & color-combo i want,
including custom, user-defined ones.
it seems i must drag one of the entire-systems into
"ye olde monitor repaire shoppe".. i'll give you guys
and gals a follow-up when (if!) i <finally> figure-out
what the true story is.
