Thanks to those who tried to help. The problem is indeed with access to newdar. At least I am now generating error messages on newdar console saying that it has denied a connection from the client newt. Only problem is that the micro-linux that I used to put up X on that old machine doesn't have a copy of xhost - and for some reason copies that I put on it from elsewhere don't run - probably a file structure problem there. Any idea what the file is that xhost creates under a typical Slackware dist? I'm running Xdenu on newdar and Xdenu looks to be Slackware-based. I think I need to try popping a CD drive into newdar and see if it will set up Slackware even with only 4 MB - a full distribution couldn't hurt compared to this admirable, but limited, Xdenu.
