JMS>I think it has a lot more to do with how one is trained to think when
JMS>learning to use a computer. The interface we use sculpts how we view the
JMS>system we're using. We build an architecture in our head. I think that
JMS>when we switch to other interfaces, no matter what kind of machine we're
JMS>using, we try to learn the new interface in terms of the old one.

Amen. I find it hard sometimes to remember that with all of the icons I
move around, menus I pull down & such, the only thing I'm actually
moving is the mouse and the mouse buttons. Makes it very hard to
explain All This to folks whose only experience is with GUI's. "So what
do I click on?"

I remember this movie about an aircraft that had an explosion in the
\cockpit, but was still airborne (wassername, the skinny darkhaired one
from Charlie's Angels, was in it. Forget the name).

The handling of the tech in the movie was truly horrendous. These
brilliant writers thought, "See, there's this guy on the plane, and he
has this powerful notebook computer, see, and this other guy, he hooks
up the notebook to the plane's computers. But he doesn't know how to
run computers, he just knows how to hook them up real good. Then the
guy with the notebook clicks on stuff, and it makes the plane goes where
they want..."

Some of the more memorable lines were like: "The screen is showing total
gibberish." "So what if you click on it?"

<sigh>

JMS>After some wayward years, I'm going back to my native MSDOS.

I have pretty much stuck with DOS with few exceptions. My BBS still
runs under DOS, indivisible, with Liberty & Justice for All. I could
change to something else, but I can't think why I'd want to.
