M0 (that charater following the M is a zero) will turn the speaker off,
regardless of what program you are using and regardless of whatever modem
protocol is occurring. Simply stated, an M0 in your dial string will
silence the modem. Period.

M1 will turn speaker on during handshaking and turn speaker off while
receiving carrier. Using M1 will not keep your modem silent at all times.
"handshaking" is a kind of protocol that occurs between the host modem and
the remote modem upon connecting with each other. During the handshaking
phase, each modem sends and receives information about each other's
characteristics and features. If the two modems decide they are compatible
with each other, then further communication will proceed. Modems perform
much better than people do when it comes to evaluating their potential
for compatibility.
