As many of you may recall, I had a problem with serial ports that caused me
much grief. I tried many new cables to solve it, tests, all sorts of crazy
things but never did solve it. I finally worked around it with a
controller card to add more ports (that had some jumper fun!).
Well, now there's another machine, same bloody thing, and this time there's
no ps2 mouse port so this machine absolutely must have serials. Don't have
another controller card to suit either.
I wrote to the fellow from whom the board came about it. He had a most
interesting answer. "There are really only two kinds of connectors. Find
out which one you have by pulling up the cover at the end where you'd plug
in a mouse. If the wires go straight to the pins, or seem to cross over
each other, it's one or the other, get the kind you DON'T have."
Nifty! Well, every single cable I can find is the criss-cross type! I've
even called around and the people in this city to whom I've spoken, and
even a few in larger centers all failed to understand what I was
saying. They would respond with the usual solutions about IRQ settings,
jumpers, memory addresses, and bios settings. The odd one would state that
I should use the cables that came with the board, but that was about it.
The same fellow who explained the cables is sending me some of the "other"
type from his locale in California where apparently these things can be found.
I will let you know if this is indeed the solution.

Come to think of it, there are already a million
monkeys on a million typewriters, and Usenet is
still nothing like Shakespeare.
