Adding to what Gunnar Thoele had to say about 4DOS:

> 4DOS is a well-known replacement for the COMMAND.COM shell

4DOS by J.P Soft <http://www.jpsoft.com/> is trialware with a limited
trial period of 21 days. Quite expensive, USD 69 last time I
checked. If memory serves me right, it will function
beyond this trial period, but with more nags and increasing delays.

You will probably find the following very useful if you want to
explore 4DOS: "JP Software ASCII Reference Manual for 4DOS/4OS2/4NT"
<ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/sac/pc/utilmisc/4refman.zip> (believe this
is a copy of the sold paper manual)

Latest version of 4DOS is 4dos602.zip. Latest version plus lots of
utilities and batch scripts can also be found in:
<ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/4dos/>

There is also a 4DOS news group in the comp hierarchy
<news://comp.os.msdos.4DOS>. A very short "What is 4DOS" FAQ posted
there reliquary. If you don't care to wait until it appears again in
the NG, you can always search for it in one of major www FAQ
archives and/or search engines.

But if "all" you want is a "better doskey than doskey", plus
some extra CLI features (in fact quite a lot it seems!), you may
want to have a look at Toddy, a freeware Command line editor with
command history, filename completion, macros, aliasing, and more...

For a description see Rich Green's FSFD site:
<http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/1401/keyb01.htm#toddy>

And author Eric Tauck's homepage:
<http://user.mc.net/~warp/index.html>
where you can download Toddy (37 K)
<http://user.mc.net/~warp/ftp/toddy615.zip>

All the best,
Bjorn
