Regrettably, I must tell everyone that I've completed the list of
requests for used computers from St. Vincent Hospital, Billings,
Montana -- which means that I'll no longer be able to continue
accepting requests. So far, I've sent about *FORTY* requests to
Mary Stubson, many of which represent organizations, not just
individuals. Any requests that I received shortly after midnight
(this morning) were processed and sent to Mary -- at about 3:00am.
I'm sure you can understand that there's a limit to what can be
fairly distributed to everyone, and I've urged Ms. Stubson to
consider *every* request before beginning the rest of the project.
Also, I should add that Mary has left town for a few weeks for
a training seminar (that unending chore of furthering her
certifications) -- but I was told that she still should be
receiving her e-mail from wherever she's at. In any case, I
am going to try to contact my friend Spencer Smith of Materials
Management to see what he plans on doing. As you might expect,
there are various procedures these hospital folk must go through
to "release" these machines, paper work, gathering of packing
materials -- let alone deciding on who gets what, contacting
everyone, planning the time for doing it, etc., etc.! And don't
forget that this isn't a part of their regular duties. This
isn't Dell or Compaq. I suspect they're going to be hard pressed
just to find the time in their busy schedules to do everything as
properly and as quickly as you would like.
There's a lot of good news in this project, nonetheless! Don't
give up because you may not get anything from this hospital. You
all are contributing to a very special idea: the use of old,
discarded computers for individuals in need. Contact your local
hospitals -- my goodness! -- there's a lot of them. Watch for the
outcome of this project with our hospital to give you ideas for
approaching your *own* local hospitals for their used computers.
If these other hospitals see how it's done, they may choose to do
the same -- and that would be cheaper for you, certainly, if that
hospital is in your own backyard!
Finally, I've e-mailed Ms. Stubson to give us a rough estimate of
what we can expect. The first stage of the battle is over: we've
saved those old PCs from the landfill! Next -- how to get them
from point a to point b.
Until later, please "stay tuned" to the list(s). (I'll try to keep
subsequent notices shorter than this, too.)
Hang on everyone! God bless you all!! And thank you all for your
*VERY* encouraging e-mails!!!
