Actually, to make the unit more than a surf-toaster exclusively for the
i-Opener service, there's a bit of hardware hacking required and it costs
more than $99 (need cables, hard drive, etc.) If you're a new purchaser,
you're also committed to a 3 month subscription at about $21 per, so the
actual minimal cost (with shipping) is closer to $200. Still not bad, but
that's for an essentially useless box once you cancel the services, unless
you're handy with hardware (as in taking a Dremel tool to the epoxy that
holds the BIOS in place while you need to reprogram/replace). There's a $500
penalty clause for cancellation within 90 days.

A cool idea, but not general purpose as shipped! They say the actual cost on
the unit is closer to $500, and that they make their money on the monthly
subscription.

I don't think Netpliance has any benevolent intent. They want to make a
buck. It may turn out to be a happy ending, but right now, I wouldn't
recommend an i-Opener to anyone but a hardcore hacker/rebel.
