In general I've found the internet to be the best resource
for learning this sort of thing. If you haven't already,
learn how to do advanced searches on Altavista. I'd also
recommend installing Linux - in the course of learning
how to troubleshoot the system you'll have many
opportunities to delve deeper and connect with others who
are usually very happy to offer their expertise.
An excellent book in general about the PC is Peter Norton's
"Inside the PC".
Too bad you didn't ask about this a week earlier, before I
lost my techie bookmarks. :(
