Automatic partitioning is tricky. It's not too bad if you
have an empty partition to use; but if you have to shrink
an existing partition, it can easily go wrong. A mistake
in partitioning can destroy existing data.
The safest way to install Linux is to put it on a separate
HDD (even 80meg is enough). Or, if this is not possible,
use DOS tools to open up space on your HDD (behind your
DOS partition). This will probably involve archiving your
DOS partition and repartitioning the HDD.

This part is easy. Any Linux can be booted from the DOS
prompt using loadlin.exe.
