The technical support staff at my ISP says that they don't support
any connections at less than 19200. That is what they say. The
fact is that "Shentel.net" will work just fine at 2400 bps. I don't
know if it will work at even slower speeds. When the techies tell
you that they don't "support" something it is often just their
polite way of telling you that you are on your own and they don't
want to help. BTW, the techies at my ISP also say that they don't
support DOS. That is what they say, but I never have trouble
getting on with DOS. It is often very difficult to get a techie to
give you any straight answers. If they don't know whether something
might work or if they don't know how to help they will just tell you
that they don't support it. The techies at ISPs usually are not the
kind of folks that will confess to any ignorance about the systems
they manage and operate.

With an external modem an XT cannot handle anything faster than a
9600 connection unless you install a serial port card having a
16650 UART chip or better. The old vintage serial cards aren't
fast enough. There are also some 286s and even later vintage
machines having the earlier vintage serial cards. BTW, there are
many various freeware diagnostic utilities you can download that are
good for detecting whether your serial card has a 16650 UART chip.
