Howard, sounds to me like the audio cable from the CD-ROM drive to the
sound blaster card has not been hooked up.  If you didn't do it then it's
not.  You should be able to pick one up at Radio Shack for not much
$$$.  It goes from the audio out on the back of the CD-ROM drive to the CD
IN on the card.  Be sure to get one with the correct connectors on each
end.  Hope this helps.
