Big Blue takes on Microsoft in free software push Teach the children, well By INQUIRER staff: Tuesday 20 July 2004, 12:18 COMPUTING LEVIATHAN IBM is to offer free access to its software to US universities, the Wall St Journal reports today. The newspaper said that universities in the USA often teach the students to program for Microsoft platforms, but that could be restricting. So IBM will help universities by giving access to both its software and to developing courses aimed at teaching about operating systems such as Linux, languages like Java and database products such as DB2. There is a team of several hundred Big Bluers pushing the initiative, said the Journal. IBM may also offer hardware to certain candidates. �
